hi,
Zollie hat geschrieben:Hmmm... Okay, the engine will survive the 2N gearbox, but I think it's more relaxing to travel at 2500~3000 rpm than 3250~4000 rpm... So a heavier transmission would be nice.
that´s a different question. I agree, the noise is stressy even with the 1.6TD, and the 1.9 is even louder (like the difference between a purring cat and a roaring lion  ). The 2N is fine for a modestly boosted 1.6, but for a TDI it´s certainly more fun with a longer gearing
I have already found a 2V gearbox, and had a 3M myself. When I put the gears of the 2V on the final drive from the 3M, I would have a very nice gearbox!! My manual has exact the same instructions for both gearboxes, so it should work ;)
if everything fits fine, you should have a nice box with 2000rpm @ 100km/h. That´s pretty long but surely nice for cruising (if overtaking lorries don´t force you down to 90 and to accelerate after, so you will have to downgrade each time)
It's not the high load, it's the average piston speed I am concerned about. In a TDI that's about (95.5/86.4)= 1.105 times higher than a D/TD (with same gearbox). The engine will wear about 10% faster. Plus, with this kind of power in a 32b I think I will be using it more often, so more speed, more rpm's (more wear!) \:D/
the story of the load I mentioned because of the late injection = more consumption at low load and how to work around. Of course the load is not high at the considered conditions, so a modification would make sense. At high load there is no saving because the injection starts early already with the stock setting, so if you take your modified gearbox, no "economy-tuning" should be necessary.
The average piston speed (12,7m/s @ 4000rpm) is not critical (f.e., a JN does 15,8 @ 5500, a KV 16,4 @ 5700). The wear depends much more on number of cold startsand on thermical stress than on engine/piston speed. I guess that your TDI will survive the whole car, these engines run often 400ooo km and more on conditions an old TD would have died @ less than 200ooo.
What clutch will you take? The 210 is fine for the boosted 1.6, but for the 1Z a 228 would be better (no idea if that flywheel fits into the 4 cylinder clutch bell) because I think that with the long geared transmission you will soon get the idea of chiptuning  .

Okay, I am not an engineer for small car engines. In marine-use high speed engines the mean piston speed is about 8~12m/s. above is not recommended... Ofcourse the charging pressure is much higher than in cars, so maybe a little higher piston speed is not that bad for a TDI. Still, I like cruising, so I will be making this 2V/3M gearbox!

I have now installed a 190mm I had on my shelf. With the 2N gearbox it works okay, but I have only made little test runs. I think the biggest clutch in 4 cilinders was a 210?" I will search for one while my gearbox is in production! I have a boosted 1.6 with 190mm and it works very nice, no slip even when I had it screwed up to max ;)

Chiptining... Well I brought the computer in for removing the keyring lock, removing brake and clutch signal etc... I think the guy put a chip in it for me ;) (I asked for around 105pk!)

Driven about 120km today... wow! A bit high in revs, but when you touch the pedal, it's 100 to 170 in no time! (hmmm, compared to my TD :u: ) And the nice turbo whistle :notworthy:

that´s a pity. Brake and clutch signal are necessary for cruise control. I upgraded my Golf which had no cruise control either, the parts are cheap (<5€) and with VAGCOM you can activate it by yourself. Once you have it, you´ll never give it away, even less if you drive mainly on highways. I don´t know how strictly speed is checked in Netherlands, but in France you are lost without it.
In my 1.6 TD even the 200mm cluch slipped, so i put in a 210 as I swapped the 3M to 2N.

Thanks for the nice Photo documentation :respekt .

slipping with a 200? I can't get it to slip with a 190... And I took the car fully loaded with 4 guys to a skiing trip!! No problems :occasion5:

For the cruise control you also need the speed signal. I know you can get it from the back of the cluster, but you also need the old-style handles behind the wheel.
I have been loooking around but these parts do not go for small prices. around 60 for the new speed sensor, and ebay prices 25~75 for the handles. It's not worth it for me, I am happy driving with my foot :D

But the handle is nothing more than a Switch (on/off) and two hold-switch (1. accelerate / set, 2. reset). You only need to solder 4 cables, and you're done. VW's handle is not necessary. In mine TDI i have such a switch, 8 EUR for materials at the local electronic market (Conrad), the switches i've use are from "Marquardt".

For the Speed Sensor you should look on T3 Info, i think they have found a cheap Hall sensor, to replace in the speedo device.

(okay not totally cheap)

Okay, but that's when you make a small swithboard somewhere in the dashboard? If I want cruise control, I want an original VW mk2 handle installed :D

The traffic I am usually in does not demand a CC, I drive about 200km of highway a week, but the parts I can drive constant speed are hardly 2km. There is just too much traffic...

Visited other collectors, nice cars! (around 40 cars in the building, I think 10x 32b, one Audi 100 t43 avant, lot of audi 80 etc etc)
They wanted to have GLS plates on their GLS, but they were too late, now they have GLT on the plates. Both brothers drive a 1981 GLS as daily!
